Shirley Ann Burley, 80, of Altoona, passed away peacefully on Friday, surrounded by all of her loving family who held her close until the very end. Born in Hanover, Pa., Shirley was the daughter of the late Earl Strohm and Virginia (Thomas) Strohm. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose gentle heart and unconditional love touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.
Shirley was a 1964 graduate of Altoona High School. She worked for Dr. Penny and eventually retired from Blair Medical Associates after years of dedicated service.
Above all else, Shirley treasured time spent with her family. She found her greatest joy in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and had a gift for making every person she loved feel like the most important person in the world.
She loved trips to the ocean and eating out with her family.
Shirley is survived by her beloved husband, Ray Burley Sr., the love of her life and her devoted partner for 66 beautiful years; her son, Ray Burley Jr. and his wife, Annie; her daughter, Lori Housum and significant other, Jason Dixon; her grandchildren: Tyler Housum and his girlfriend, Tara Brannon, Justine Jagel and Megan Housum; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Kendall and Jarek Jagel. She is also survived by four siblings: Linda Deters, Earline Riley, Barbara Staines and Omar Strohm.
She was preceded in death by two siblings: Virginia Lesko and Lloyd Strohm.
Shirley was a woman of extraordinary strength, grace and love who never once complained through life’s most difficult moments. She was well loved by absolutely everyone she met and will be remembered always as a sweet, comforting and kindhearted soul whose presence made the world a warmer and gentler place. Her family loved her more than life itself and will miss her more than words could ever express.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the hospice team, especially Karen, Kelly and Emily, for the compassionate and dedicated care they provided to Shirley during this time. Their kindness and support meant more to the family than they will ever know.
Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home Inc., 719 N. Fourth Ave., Altoona.
Friends will also be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the funeral home, where a funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Elizabeth Hess officiating. Interment will be made at Alto-Reste Park.
