Richard Calvin Stauffer, 97, Altoona, passed away Tuesday.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late George Calvin and Grace Viola (Glass) Stauffer. On January 20, 1950 he married Shirley M. Burket.

In addition to his wife, Shirley, of 73 years; he is survived by sisters-in-law: Dorothy Stauffer and Betty Burket, both of State College, Beverly Neil of Altoona and Laura Burket of Huntingdon. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Stauffer.

Dick was a 1944 graduate of Altoona High School and a 1951 graduate of Shippensburg University. He was a reading teacher at Roosevelt Junior High School where he retired in 1989. He also coached Varsity Track and Field and Cross Country at Altoona Area High School from 1956 into the late 60’s. He held the first night meet at Mansion Park.

He was avid softball player with the Logantown Team and was a Western Movie buff and avid reader.

He served in the United States Navy on the USS Douglas L Howard from 1944 to 1946.

A private service will be held with military honors at Blair Memorial Park where inurnment will take place at the convenience of the family.
