Margaret Alice Patterson Shaffer

Margaret Alice Patterson Shaffer, 92, formerly of Altoona, passed away Monday at Conemaugh Nason Medical Center.

She was born in Hyde, PA, daughter of the late Rev. Garland C. and Janet (Beveridge) Patterson. On May 30, 1948, she married John Thomas Shaffer in the Wolfsburg Methodist Church. The bride’s father married them. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage until his death, September 6, 2004.

Margaret graduated from Bedford High School in 1947. After graduation she worked as a dental assistant for Dr. H.A. Brightbill of Bedford, a rate clerk for Maryland Causality Co. of Silver Spring, MD, and a homemaker. She was a member of the Altoona Alliance Church. She served as president of the Women’s Prayer Fellowship and taught Sunday school in the Hamilton Park Alliance Church of Allentown. She was an active member of the 60 Alive Group in her church.

She is survived by a son, James of England; a daughter, Monty Smouse and husband, David of Hollidaysburg; a son, Lynn and wife, Patricia of Altoona. She is also survived by two granddaughters: Rebecca (Shaffer) Wagner and husband, Clark of Reedsville and Gabrielle of England; five great grandchildren: Avery, Emmah, Reiss, and Brynlee Miller of Reedsville and Thomas of England.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alison Shaffer; two sisters: Monty Patterson and Jean Adamo; and a brother, William Patterson.

Margaret enjoyed reading and spending time with family and friends.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 pm on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N 4^th Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held immediately following at 4 pm with Pastor Rebecca Holland officiating. Interment will be made at Friends Cove United Church of Christ Cemetery in Bedford.
