Gary A. Burns, 73, of Altoona, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, May 16, 2025. Born and raised in Altoona, he was the son of the late Albert and Mildred Burns and the beloved spouse of the late Deborah A. Ritchey.
A proud graduate of Altoona Area High School, Gary dedicated his life to service—first to his country, then to his community. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served with honor as a 91B Medic and E5 Sergeant with the 341st Medical Company. He completed Advanced Individual Training at the U.S. Medical Training Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, becoming an Emergency Treatment NCO. Gary earned numerous medals for his service and became one of the most proficient medical trainers in his unit. He retired from military service on January 16, 2012.
Following his military career, Gary continued his mission of helping others by completing the Emergency Medical Services Program and serving many years as a paramedic with A.M.E.D. He held a deep respect for his fellow paramedics, who he considered extended family, and took great pride in the work they did together.
Gary was a man who lived life with purpose and heart. He never met a stranger and was always ready for a deep conversation, a laugh, or to play a classic rock tune—especially anything from Kid Rock. He was known for his unwavering honesty, saying what needed to be said whether you liked it or not. He held those around him accountable, especially his son and his friends, many of whom he treated like his own. His presence was strong, his heart was generous, and his loyalty unmatched.
A devoted father, loving pap, and loyal friend, Gary found his greatest joy in time spent with his grandchildren. He loved cheering them on at the ballfield, sharing sweet tea and stories, and watching Pittsburgh Steelers games with full passion—never missing a play if he could help it.
Gary is survived by his son Shane G. Burns,(Angela R. Tettis), daughter Georgiana M. Condon, five grandchildren: Casey M. Billetdeaux, Nico G. Burns, Silvana A. Burns, Italia M. Burns, and Carmelo A. Burns; two great-grandchildren: Sidney Billetdeaux and Charli Billetdeaux; and several nieces and nephews, all of Altoona.
A veteran’s graveside service will be held on Friday, May 23rd 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 501 E Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of life following the service at 1914 Washington Ave, Altoona, PA 16601.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support final expenses by contributing directly to Shane Burns or through the GoFundMe page shared on social media.
Gary’s legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the family he cherished, and the memories we’ll carry with us always.
Thank you for being part of his journey.
