Dorothy Jean Sands was a sweet, caring, loving daughter, wife, mother “sister”, Grandmother, aunt and friend. She left this world and went to heaven on Monday, December 14th after having acquired the COVID 19 virus and following a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Dorothy was born to Benjamin Franklin Weber and Catherine Uldene (Moffitt) Weber on December 20, 1932. After graduating from Altoona Area High School she worked for Bell Telephone, Blair County Prothonatary Office and later at J.C. Penney. After the age of 26 she married William D. Sands, Jr. Together they had 2 children William D. Sands, III and Lisa J. DeGol married to Joseph A. DeGol. She was very proud of her grandson Joseph M. DeGol. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sister-in-law Marjorie Jackson and brother-in-law Richard Jackson and her companion of 12 years Joseph Strasser. Surviving are her children, son-in-law, grandson, her life long friend and “sister of her heart” Janet Shaffer, her cousins and nieces and nephews and their extended families and her beloved dog Schatzi. Dorothy was a life long member of Juniata United Methodist Church (formerly Gethsemane United Methodist Church) and sang in the chancel choir. She was a 60 plus year member of Beta Sigma Phi and enjoyed many fun times with her sorority sisters. Dorothy enjoyed music, reading, traveling, swimming and sunbathing. She had a love of dogs and a special fondness for miniature schnauzers. Arrangements are by the Mauk and Yates Funeral Home, Inc. A memorial service will be held at the Juniata United Methodist Church on August 5th with a receiving of friends from 10:00-11:00am with a 11am service. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 North 4th Street, Altoona, PA 16601.
