Mary Pearce Zetler

June 4, 1913 — November 10, 2008

Mary Pearce Zetler, 95, of Altoona, PA, died at home after a lengthy illness. She was born in Altoona, daughter of the late William F. and Mary R. (Salkeld) Pearce. She married Paul A. Zetler September 29, 1939. He preceded her in death June 21, 1954. Mary is survived by her son P. Alan Zetler, Jr. (Beth) of Newry; four daughters: Carmen Zetler Kirk of Cheyenne, WY, Jane Zetler Smith (Al) of Altoona, Anne Zetler Lioy (Joseph) of Altoona, and Rebecca Mae Cumming of Altoona; one grandson and four granddaughters; two great grandsons and two great granddaughters, . Mary retired as a school counselor from Altoona Area High School, and had held numerous teaching and counseling positions over the yearsfrom 1932-1939, at Altoona School for Secretaries; from 1954-1969, at Claysburg Kimmel High School, from 1969-1978, at Altoona High School, and from 1978-1985 worked for Blue and White Travel as a tour hostess and in public relations. Mary was a 1931 graduate of Altoona High School, and went on to earn a bachelor of science as well as a master of education degree from Penn State. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa (education honorary society), National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, Pennsylvania State Employee's Retirement System, Order of Easter Star, and had served as President of the Pennsylvania School Counselors' Association. She enjoyed bridge, puzzles, travel, and knitting. Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday, November13, 2008, and noon until the 1pm service Friday at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc. Private interment at Rose Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Altoona Area School District Foundation, 1415 Sixth Avenue, Altoona, PA 16602
