Margaretta B. Perry, 98, Altoona, passed away Thursday evening at Graystone Manor at Bellemeade.
She was born in Sunbury, PA, a daughter of the late Christian and Olive (Beers) Schmidt. On April 9, 1939, she married F. Wayne Perry at Trinity Lutheran Church, Juniata. He preceded her in death on March 7, 1988.
Margaretta is survived by a son, Richard W. and wife Sandra of Moline, IL; a daughter, Lois J. Gutshall and husband Thomas S. of Altoona; a grandson, Thomas R. Gutshall and wife Lisa; and two great grandchildren, Joshua and Lillian Gutshall.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Christian (infant) and Richard Schmidt.
Margaretta was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School. She was a life-long member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Juniata where she served in many capacities using her seamstress skills to make choir robes, confirmation gowns, altar hangings, wall banners, and many other things. She was a member of Friends of Altoona Hospital Auxiliary, Blair Towers Residents Council, Life member of Altoona Chapter #290, Order of the Eastern Star, Dorcas Temple, Daughters of the Nile, and Jobel Court #11 Ladies Oriental Shrine.
She was employed at Altoona High School and worked in the cafeteria and also worked as a seamstress for Gables Department Store. She was an active volunteer at the Altoona Hospital for over 30 years. She received the Altoona Chamber of Commerce “George” Award in 1998 for volunteer of the year. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crafts, crocheting, reading, playing pinochle, and generally keeping busy.
Friends will be received from 2 until the 4 p.m. funeral service on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Mauk & Yates Funeral Home, Inc., 719 N 4th Avenue, Altoona. Pastor Elizabeth Hess officiating. Interment will be made at Grandview Cemetery, Altoona.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Memorial Fund, 408 N 6th Street, Altoona, 16601 or to Jaffa Shrine Hospitals for Children.
